      CASE 46

    SIGNALMENT:

    3 month old Miniature Pinscher;
    weight = 4.6 lbs.

    HISTORY:

    The owner reported that the previous night, the dog became suddenly lame in the right front leg after running out the front door.  The dog was not hit by a car, and no other trauma was noted.

    DIAGNOSIS:

    The referring veterinarian had diagnosed an elbow fracture in this dog.  An additional AP view of the elbow (Figure 1) shows this to be a lateral condyle fracture with slight comminution.

    Figure 1

    The AP view allows us to better characterize and describe this fracture as a lateral condylar fracture of the elbow (Salter type IV).

    Postoperative AP view of the same
    elbow. A bone screw and k-wire repair
    this fracture.

    SURGERY:

    Repair involved placement of a bone screw across the fracture and a second small k-wire obliquely above the growth plate for rotational stability. (Figure 2)

    ACKNOWLEDGMENT:

    Thank you to Dr. Dan Jones, Broken Arrow Small Animal Hospital, for this referral.
