      CASE 45

    SIGNALMENT:

12 year old female Husky mix

    HISTORY:

A mass present on the medial side of the left elbow was described as slowly growing over a 5 year period.  The mass had been biopsied by the referring veterinarian and was subsequently referred for surgical excision.

    DIAGNOSTICS:

Previous diagnostic tests included a fine needle aspirate and an incisional biopsy.  The incisional biopsy was read as a lipoma.  Differentials included liposarcoma and infiltrative lipoma as well as lipoma.

    SURGERY:

Preoperative photograph of the leg showing the large, ulcerated mass on the medial side of the left elbow (figure 1).

The mass has been excised and the wound closed in layers.  Skin staples are visible and a Penrose drain has been placed in the wound (figure 2).  Healing was uncomplicated and the lesion has not recurred.  The tumor was diagnosed histopathologically as a lipoma.
