      CASE 38

    SIGNALMENT:

14 year old male neutered Chihuahua.

    HISTORY:

The dog experienced an episode of acute respiratory distress four days prior to referral. At the time he was seen at the local emergency clinic and diagnosed with a mass in the right side of the lung field. (Figure 1 and Figure 2)

    TREATMENT:

Options for diagnoses were discussed and the owner elected to have a thoractotomy done. Right 5th intercostal thoracotomy was done. An intermuscular lipoma was encountered in the surgical approach and can be appreciated on the ventrodorsal radiographic projection. (Figure 2)

Upon entering the chest, a mass involving the entire right middle lung lobe was encountered and complete lobectomy done. Sections of the resected tissue were submitted for histopathology.

    HISTOPATHOLOGY

    Bronchiolar-alveolar adenocarcinoma, lung.

    COMMENT:

The prognosis in this case is poor, as the entire lung lobe was involved and tumor cells extended to the margins. A more complete resection was not possible.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENT:

Thank you to Dr. Dan Danner, Animal Medical and Surgical Hospital, for this referral.
