    CASE 27
    SIGNALMENT:

    Seven-month old female Maltese.

    HISTORY:

Progressive lameness of one month duration in the left rear leg. The dog was non-weightbearing on the left hindlimb upon presentation.

    DIAGNOSIS:

Physical examination revealed pain upon hyperextension of the left hip joint. A ventrodorsal view of the pelvis is seen in Figure 1. Changes in the left femoral head and neck are consistent with Legge-Perthes type syndrome.

    Figure 1

VD radiographic projection of the pelvis in a seven-month old Maltese with a one-month
history of lameness. Note the degenerative
changes present in the left femoral head and
neck as compared to the right side.

    TREATMENT:

A left femoral head and neck ostectomy was done utilizing a craniolateral approach to the hip via muscle separation technique. The dog was discharged the same day of surgery.
